The 'backend' is where you will update your own site or multiple sites which includes your news, content, media, etc.

The difference between the frontend login (villagelocal.com) and your backend login (domain.tld/typo3/) is that the frontend will be for community use (future forum use, etc) and the backend will be mainly for website updates.
